Value for money

Office 365 is very competitively priced. When you factor in the amount of mailbox and cloud storage you receive, as well as the Office licensing, you are hard pressed to find a better alternative either in the hosted or traditional Exchange server space.

Up-to-Date and secure

When using Office 365 you can be assured that you are always up to date with all of the latest features and enhancements, as well as with security and protection. Microsoft automatically take care of this for you behind the scenes.

Easy to use but powerful

Office 365 makes it easy to use and administer through a simple and intuitive interface so most common tasks are only a few clicks away. However for more advanced administrators you still get the full benefit of Exchange Online and PowerShell access.

Uptime

Office 365 comes with a 99.9% uptime guarantee, through a financially backed Service Level Agreement meaning if there are any issues that affect the uptime level, you can be financially compensated. For most organizations with on premise infrastructure, this kind of uptime can be very hard to achieve.

Staff Flexibility

Office 365 empowers your staff by giving them more options. They can access Office applications through almost any browser, as well as having access to the Office suite on almost all mobile devices.

Collaboration

Office 365 brings with it a number of tools to improve collaboration in your workplace. You get Sharepoint for creating team sites, OneDrive for shared storage, Skype for Instant Messaging and video calling, Yammer for social networking and more.

Scalability

Taking on more staff is not a problem with Office 365. Additional performance and storage is available almost instantly. And if you downsize the same resources can be scaled back just as quickly. Compare that to an on-premise solution where new staff may mean additional infrastructure and associated costs that may not be recouped if those staff leave.

Everything in the cloud

Just as having everything in the cloud can be a great benefit, it can also be an issue for some organizations. Consider if there are any laws or regulations in your industry regarding the storing of data in the cloud.

Internet becomes critical

Consider the potential Internet usage and consumption that is needed for Office 365. Some organizations are connected to poor Internet infrastructure which could make Office 365 untenable. And if your Internet goes down, you lose almost all Office 365 access. Even the desktop versions of Office applications require Internet access at least every 30 days to keep running.

Giving up control

Some organizations have highly customized email infrastructure which could be incompatible with Office 365. Since you are giving up control of your infrastructure you can’t simply install or run a program as you would on your on-premise Exchange server.

Forced updates / changes

While updates are generally a good thing, some organizations rely on specific versions of tools and applications for certain tasks. With the Office 365 platform, you generally have little say in receiving updates and changes. This can also affect services, as Microsoft can choose to stop offering certain products or services that your business may rely on.

Ongoing cost

As Office 365 is a subscription there is an ongoing cost to using the service. While it may still be better value for money in the long run, some organizations prefer upfront or one-off costs for various reasons.
